While I was working on this project at AltaVista, I had to be very careful with the content of the article. Our Marketing department had some strict guidelines about what could and could not be included in these kinds of articles. Since this was the first version of Rational Rose Enterprise Edition that AltaVista had released, everyone on our team was extremely excited about it and we wanted to let our users know how happy we were about it too. Our Marketing department was afraid that if we allowed us to write anything positive about ourselves in these articles, we would seem like we were bragging and therefore seem unprofessional. They were very adamant about requiring us to write positive information about our software and nothing else. After all, the whole purpose of the magazine was to let people know how great AltaVista was. We had users who subscribed to our magazine for this kind of content; they would subscribe to other similar magazines if they didn't get it from us. So, my job as an article writer/editor at AltaVista was to take my team's ideas and make them sound like they came from me (kind of like playing a role in a play). I did not have much input into these articles, but I definitely gave it my best effort when I wrote them. It's a lot of work to write a complete content article from scratch, and it wasn't always fun. I had to make sure that everything in the articles sounded correct and believable, while trying to put my own personal touch on it. I had to be creative with my words and make sure that everything fit together nicely. In this example, the article I was working on was about something called Rational Rose Enterprise Edition v 7.0. It was a piece of software that made designing business applications simpler for everyone involved, while allowing us to retain control over the look and feel of our products. I knew that my article had to sound like it came from my own experience, but I didn't know exactly how, or exactly what it had to include. Anyway, this is the end of the post about the software itself, now on to some examples of what can be included in an article like this. This was a very positive article about a product that we had just released. I was a little surprised to see a whole section on "how good" it was, because that wasn't really the focus of our company or what our company's true objective was.
